Placement testing

Placement tests determine which first-year classes you should take. These tests help your advisor place you in the appropriate course level. It is important you begin at your skill level because this sets you up to advance successfully.

Who needs to take placement tests

  • Those that chose "test optional" and did not submit an ACT or SAT test score when you applied.
    • If you did take the ACT or SAT and were admitted to UA without submitting your test score, we encourage you to submit your test score now.
    • Submitting your scores will not change your admission status or your Merit Scholarship award (if applicable).
    • To submit your test score(s), please ask your high school counselor to submit them on your behalf to the Office of Admissions. Or contact or and request to have them submitted to the Office of Admissions.
  • Testing requirements are determined by a student’s ACT or SAT subscores and academic major. For specific questions, please refer to the testing requirements by content area (e.g. Math, Reading, Writing, Computer Literacy, and Foreign Language).

How placement testing works

  1. You will receive an email from nsotesting@uakron.edu. (This email will be sent to all the email addresses we have for you, including your new UA email address.)
  2. The email will include your specific test requirements, which may include all or any of the subjects above.
  3. Math and Foreign Language can be taken once online. Reading, writing, and computer literacy must be taken in a testing center. Click on the subject to see specific details for each test.

Important: You must complete your placement test(s) BEFORE your New Roo Advising appointment. Otherwise, you may experience a delay in course registration.
